The Galle Face Green and the beach area which is attracted by local and foreign tourists, is heavily polluted by plastic and polythene substances.
As a solution to this problem, the Sri Lanka Navy took the initiative to place creatively and beautifully produced garbage bins at the Galle Face Green last week.
As the Navy is concerned of the non degradable waste, plastic and polythene, placing of the creative garbage bins was taken on as a social responsibility project to prevent the public’s disorganised garbage disposal. Since these bins were produced in the shape of a dummy fish people are attracted to them. Through this initiative, the Navy expects to create a waste free environment at the Galle Face Green and beach.
The Navy produces fancy items - flower pots, fence posts, and interlocks for gardens by recycling collected polythene and plastic. It also maintains a few pre processing centres for plastic recycling.
By conducting these programs the Navy wishes to keep Sri Lanka free of plastic and polythene waste. It’s our responsibility to assist in these efforts.
