19 January, 2020

The committee appointed by the Government to study the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) agreement, has started its work based on documents provided by the Government and also through independent studies, Chairman of the MCC review committee, senior economist Prof Lalithasiri Gunaruwan told the Sunday Observer yesterday.

In a brief discussion he assured that the committee is willing to conduct the review with the ‘highest professional integrity.’.

In October last year, the previous government decided to enter into the MCC pact granted by the United States, which covers development in transportation and land sectors of the country.

Following the massive public interest on the terms of the agreement, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa appointed an expert committee headed by Prof. Gunaruwan to review the agreement.

Former Secretary to the Ministry of Transport D.S. Jayaweera, President’s Counsel Nihal Jayawardena and Architect Nalaka Jayaweera are members of the committee.

“We have been given four months to complete our job and hand over the report to the government. We are now studying the agreement through documents given by the government as well as independent expert opinions from outside. However, ‘national interest’ will be the top priority of our study” Prof. Gunaruwan said.
