All eyes to be on Sri Lanka’s Mathews

Angelo Mathews is most likely to come under intense scrutiny when Sri Lanka takes on Zimbabwe in the first of two Test matches at the Harare Sports Club ground in Zimbabwe today.

Mathews who has never been consistent with the bat in all three formats of the game has averaged less than 30 in three of his last four seasons with the bat and his presence comes at the expense of the younger Kusal Perera who was dropped in a bold more by the national cricket team selectors.

But Mathews can consider himself fortunate to be attempting a return to form against a team like Zimbabwe who are at the bottom of the Test rankings.

Zimbabwe have not had a good record against Sri Lanka having drawn five and lost an equal number in home conditions.

Sri Lanka had the better of Zimbabwe the last time the two teams met in a Test series in Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe is making a comeback into Test cricket after a suspension by the International Cricket Council (ICC) over its administration of the sport that had been embroiled in politics. Sri Lanka likely team: Dimuth Karunaratne (captain), Oshada Fernando, Kusal Mendis, Angelo Mathews, Dinesh Chandimal, Dhananjaya de Silva, Niroshan Dickwella, Dilruwan Perera, Suranga Lakmal, Lasith Embuldeniya, Lahiru Kumara

Zimbabwe likely team: Kevin Kasuza, Prince Masvaure, Brendan Taylor, Craig Ervine, Sean Williams (captain), Sikandar Raza, Regis Chakabva, Donald Tiripano, Victor Nyauchi, Kyle Jarvis, Ainsley Ndlovu
