New coach for athletics

Veteran YK Kularatne has been appointed as the National coach for athletics in Sri Lanka, the Athletic Association of Sri Lanka (AASL) said.

More than a hundred athletes had been mentored by Kularatne during his 37 year career as an athletic coach who retired from government service recently.

Kularatne who joined the government service as a sports officer in 1980 was the Project Officer at the Ministry of Sports at the time of his retirement in March 2017.

He is the elder of identical twins and was educated at Wanigasekera Vidyalaya in Wewahamanduwa after which he entered St. Thomas’ College Matara for a brief period.

Thereafter he was admitted to Rahula College Matara where he trained with coach Sunil Jayaweera and specialized in the 400 and 800 metre events winning public schools colours in 1974.

After taking up to coaching as a career he attended many training courses abroad and is an IAAF Level 5 accredited coach. (KR)
