Tharusha Kulasinghe is a rising athlete of the future who is endeavouring to bring accolades to S. Thomas’ College Mount Lavinia by winning trophies.

He has competed in almost all school athletic meets since 2016 and has done well in the 100 and 200m events and a member of the relay team.

Tharusha began his sporting career at St. Thomas’ College, Guruthalawa at the age of 11 and played in the under-13 junior rugby tournament.

After witnessing the talent of Tharusha the coach of S. Thomas’ Mt. Lavinia obtained the permission from the school authorities and invited Tharusha to join the school. He then played rugby for the school in 2012 at the age of 11 years and was named as captain of the under-13 team.

Athletics being his pet sport, he performed well in the meets held by the College and noting his talents the athletic coach Susiripala decided to take charge of Tharusha and make him a frontline athlete.

Tharusha started his athletic career in 2016 and competed in the under-18 category and did well to win in the 100m and 200m events the same year. Earlier, he was placed first and third in the under-17 age group at the all island schools meet.

He was placed second in the 100m and third in the 200m at the Zonal meet and won the 100m event and was second in the 200m event at the Western Schools Athletic Championship.

Tharusha made the maximum benefits in 2017 and 2018 by winning many awards at the Divisional, Zonal and Western Province Schools athletic meets.

Tharusha won the gold medal in the 100m race in a record time of 10.90 seconds at the Public Schools Meet last year. He also finished second in the 200m race in a time of 22.03 seconds in the same meet.
