SLPP, SLFP to decide on election symbol

2 February, 2020

The SLPP and the SLFP will decide on the election symbol this week which will be used at the General Election with the dissolution of Parliament on March 2, political sources told the Sunday Observer yesterday.

The decision will be made at a meeting with the return of SLPP Founder Basil Rajapaksa from the United States early this week, they said.

This follows the SLPP telling the SLPP hierarchy that if the SLFP wants to contest the General Elections in collaboration with the SLPP that it has to contest under the “Pohottuwa” ( Lotus Bud) symbol while the SLFP had insisted that the SLPP should agree to contest under the Chair symbol.

So, the SLPP Provincial Councils Collective has met Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa on Tuesday and insisted that SLPP Founder Basil Rajapaksa be brought from the USA to Sri Lanka at his earliest to sort out these critical issues. (Basil Rajapaksa left the country soon to the US after the Presidential polls on November 16, 2019)

A meeting is expected to take place soon as to on what basis the General Elections, the Provincial and Local Government will be contested and on what basis and under which symbol, these sources said.
