Sri Lanka gets Deputy Chairman position

Health Services Director General Dr. Anil Jasinghe has been appointed Deputy Chairman, Executive Board of World Health Organization (WHO), Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi said.

Addressing a press conference at the Health Ministry Auditorium in Colombo yesterday, the Minister said it is an honour for Sri Lanka and extended her good wishes to Dr. Jasinghe.

Dr. Anil Jasinghe said Minister Wanniarachchi had been scheduled for the position by the WHO but she had refused to leave the country at this juncture because Sri Lanka is effectively controlling coronavirus infections in the country and the situation needed to be monitored and guided.

Dr. Jasinghe said he took part in the WHO event only for one and a half days and returned to the country, leaving a Sri Lankan health official in Geneva due to the exigency of work. The event was held from February 3 to 8 in Geneva.

Dr. Anil Jasinghe joined the medical administration as Medical Superintendent of the Provincial Hospital, Badulla in 1996. In 2009 he became the Director, Colombo South Teaching Hospital, and then the Director of the National Hospital of Sri Lanka (NHSL). At present he is the Director General, Health Services.

He had his primary education at Mahinda College Galle and secondary education at Ananda College, Colombo. He graduated from Lvov State Medical Institute of the former Soviet Union and holds Msc Community Medicine and MD in Medical Administration from Postgraduate Institute of Medicine in Sri Lanka. In 2011 he obtained Master of Public Administration (MPA) from Postgraduate Institute of Management of Sri Jayewardenepura University.
