Minister Weerawansa marks 20 years in politics

Small and Medium Business, Enterprise Development, Industries and Supply Chain Management Minister Wimal Weerawansa marked 20 years in politics yesterday.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa also participated in a ceremony to mark the event at the at Nelum Pokuna Theatre.

Weerawansa, a people friendly-person is regarded as a politician with nationalist ideals who resolutely stands for issues concerning national interests. He formed the National Freedom Front after breaking away from the JVP in 2008. He entered Parliament in 2010 from the Colombo District on the UPFA ticket securing the highest preferential votes, 280,672 and at the 2015 General Election he topped the list mustering 313,801 preferential votes even surpassing UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe. Subsequently he was appointed Minister of Construction, Engineering Services Housing and Common Amenities.

He has initiated programs to uplift the living standards of the people. Under the Janasaviya National Housing and Settlement Development Drive, he was instrumental in building 30,000 housing units per year for the needy. Weerawansa was appointed Small and Medium Business, Enterprise Development, Industries and Supply Chain Management Minister when a new Government was formed following the Presidential Election 2019.
