One of the chief architects of the International Schools Athletic Championships, Dr. Harsha Alles believes they have got what it takes to unearth new talent for the country’s future by way of track and field athletes.

Speaking to the Sunday Observer at the conclusion of last week’s International Schools meet that was contested by over 20 schools, Alles said their ultimate goal was to see sportsmen and women from these schools hit the grade in Sri Lanka.

“It was a very successful meet and this year more schools participated.

“Our main goal is to produce more athletes to represent Sri Lanka and I can proudly say that currently four athletes are representing Sri Lanka from Gateway College,” said Alles who is the chairman of Gateway Group.

Sadeepa Andersen (100 and 200), Nadeesha Andersen (100 and 200), Anjali Kulawansa (long jump), Shermila Jansz (200 relay), Shehan Ambepitiya (100) and Iresha Ranasinghe are some of the athletes who have represented Sri Lanka from International Schools.

From a small meet held at the Shalika ground in Narahenpita, the championship is now second to none in the country and was conducted at the Sugathadasa International Stadium.

“The meet is unique because it has produced not only national level athletes but International Schools students have gone on to represent Sri Lanka at international competitions as well,” said Alles

Lyceum International School, Wattala with a total of 92 medals (Gold 39, Silver 30 and Bronze 23) once again won the overall title while Gateway College, Colombo emerged runners-up with a total of 72 medals including 24 Gold, 29 Silver and 19 Bronze.

In addition, a total of 54 new meet records were established.
