Black eyeliner has something for everyone

“When you think of black eyeliner, you think of all time periods," said Pat McGrath backstage at Marc Jacobs as she administered various washes and traces of liner to create different moods. “Past, present, and future—it’s everything.” Her words rang true throughout the season, from the crystal-studded, negative-space eye encasings at Valentino to the idiosyncratic floating flicks at Stella McCartney and intentionally rounded rimmings of black eyeliner at Dior. “A bit sharper or pointier, it suddenly becomes a bit more couture, more elegant,” explained Peter Philips of the Dior designs. “[We wanted] to keep it kind of street-cool. Like you’ve done it yourself.”
