Old Peterites scored a hard fought 1-0 win over Old Benedictines in the inaugural Milroy Perera Memorial Trophy soccer encounter played at St. Benedict’s College ground, Kotahena last month thereby giving their late mentor a fitting tribute

Fears of the coronavirus compelled organisers to conduct the match only for selected invitees including the family members of the late Milroy Perera and the late Tissa Kodituwakku who were present to witness the action.

Milroy Perera passed away last year and was involved in promoting soccer and other sports at St. Peter’s College. He was the live-wire in inviting the late Kodituwakku to coach St. Peter’s soccer team which won many trophies under his guidance.

To honour Kodituwakku, the Peterite Football Club presented the original jersey worn by him with the number 13 and his name to his wife and son at the end of the match.

As the inaugural Milroy Perera Trophy soccer match kicked off, both Old Benedictines (Bens) and Old Peterites opted to keep the ball by passing it among themselves for nearly 15 minutes.   In the 18th minute Ishan Danusha Perera who was recently included in the national pool, received the ball from midfield and dribbled past two Old Bens defenders and slotted the ball into the right corner of the net to give Old Peterites the lead.  Seven minutes later Old Bens had a golden opportunity of equalizing but Dinal Senadi’s header was well saved by Old Peterites’ goal keeper and vice captain Dulan Abeyweera.   Old Peterites who led one nil at half time had another chance of scoring but Danusha Perera was brought down by one of the Old Bens defenders inside the box and the referee straight away pointed for a spot kick.

Danusha Perera himself took the penalty but his left footer was well saved by Nishan Rajapakse diving to his right.  Thereafter Old Bens made all efforts to equalize but they were foiled by a few superb saves by the Old Peterite goal keeper.   When the whistle was blown for full time, Old Peterites won the match with the score reading 1-0.   Danusha Perera fondly known as ‘Pancha’ won both the best player’s award and the man of the match award while Old Bens custodian Nishan Rajapakse was also adjudged as the best player for bringing up nearly three saves including the penalty.

Parish Priest of St. Mary’s Church Bambalapitiya and former Rector St. Peter’s Rev. Fr. Felician Ranjith was the chief guest while Rev. Bro. Pubudu Rajapakse and Rev. Bro. Praveen Vaas - both tutorial Staff of St. Benedict’s, Anura de Silva - president FFSL and Mrs. Milroy Perera were special guests.

The Old Bens side comprised Trevin Ramanathan (captain), Rohan Boteju (vice captain), Nishan Rajpakse (GK), Shehan Lakshitha, Chameera Krishantha, Thilanka Nandasiri, Dilan Perera, Disal Senadi, Shenal Kavinda, Dennis Dissanayake, Harin Fernando, Dextor Bernard, Minol Shohan, Stephan Pillai, Charith Isanka, Mahesh Trevor, Jude Geston, Sameera Sampath, Nuwan Dushan, Savan Nimesh, Janith Piumal and Shane Martinesz.
