A vaccine for Covid-19 will not become a reality until early next year (2021), a prominent Sri Lankan microbiologist and world renowned pathologist Prof. Malik Peiris told the media on Thursday (7).

According to Prof. Peiris, the new vaccine presented by Italy cannot be named as the most successful one and it is said that it will be tested on human beings by the end of this year. It had been tested using rats.

Prof. Peiris said that three vaccines against Covid-19 had been presented by US, three such vaccines by China and one vaccine presented by UK. Testing the vaccine on human beings has been commenced.

When considering the current situation, a vaccine for Covid-19 will not be available until early next year (2021), he said.

Recently, the International media reported about a new vaccine introduced by Italy which can fight Covid-19 but there was no response from the WHO until Thursday.
