No community spread of Covid-19 here - Chief epidemiologist

18 May, 2020

Chief epidemiologist Dr. Sudath Samaraweera noted that from May 1 until to-date there have been no cases of transmission of the virus among communities in Sri Lanka as feared.

He said that the virus is currently being reported among people who have been quarantined, including members of the Navy and others who have been quarantined upon returning from overseas. He said that although the spread of the virus has been controlled in the country, there is a risk for Sri Lanka as there is an outbreak of the disease in other parts of the world.

“This does not mean that the spread of the virus in the country has been eradicated completely. The virus is still spreading as a global epidemic and there is a risk of recurrence,” he said.

He said nearly 43900 PCR tests have been carried out in the country thus far.
