Covid-19:

No community cases in May

31 May, 2020

Following Sri Lanka’s success in its battle against the global pandemic, not a single Covid-19 patient has been reported from the community during May, Health Ministry statistics reveal.

Sri Lanka recorded its last Covid-19 case from the community on April 30, while all the patients reported thereafter are from the Welisara Navy Base cluster or various quarantine centres (foreign immigrants).

As per data released by the Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medical Services, over half of Covid-19 patients in the country were detected from the Navy cluster. From April 22, 814 Navy personnel and their close contacts were found positive while 366 of them have recovered by Saturday morning.

As of Saturday morning, 1,558 Covid positive cases had been reported with 754 recoveries and 10 deaths. Around 794 patients are still receiving treatment, three in a critical condition are receiving ICU treatment, and 75 persons are under close surveillance in island-wide hospitals.

Safety measures to prevent the further spread of the virus are still in place and the Government has declared an islandwide full day curfew on May 31, June 4 and 5.
