Foreign observers unlikely

The Parliamentary Election 2020 may be held without foreign observers due to prevailing air travel restrictions, Election Commission sources said.Countries have imposed air travel restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Foreign observer groups have cited the pandemic issue when approached by the Election Commission.

The sources said that the Election Commission might have to hold the Parliamentary Election on August 5 without the foreign observers. Meanwhile, the monitoring process of the Election Commission will start from this week, the sources said.

The Commission invites Commonwealth, European Union and Asian observers to key elections, such as Parliamentary and Presidential elections under ordinary circumstances. The local observer groups, such as PAFFREL and CMEV are yet to announce their plans to monitor the election.
