Donald Labrooy

Former Sri Lanka boxer Donald Labrooy passed away on Friday and his funeral will take place on Sunday at 3.30 at the General Cemetery Borella (Roman Catholic section).

His remains now lie at AF Raymond’s funeral parlour.

He was the father of former Sri Lanka cricketers Greame and Wendall Labrooy and boxed for Sri Lanka from 1953 to 1958, a period in which the country’s boxing reached a very high standard.

But his two sons Greame and Wendall preferred the sport of cricket and became household names in the 1980s and ‘90s.

Elder brother Greame played as a bowling allrounder and after retirement served Sri Lanka Cricket in many areas, the last being as the head of the team Selection well as an ICC Match Referee.
