Four-member committee to look into electricity bills

Power and Energy Minister Mahinda Amaraweera has appointed a four-member committee to look into public complaints on electricity bills during the three-month lockdown and make recommendations to provide relief to electricity consumers.

The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) had received a large number of complaints with regard to the unusual hike in the charges of electricity bills from March to May, when the country was under curfew due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

Minister Amaraweera said the Cabinet of Ministers was briefed on the matter during its meeting on July 1. He said President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has given instructions to provide relief to electricity consumers for irregularities in electricity bills.

The Minister said a report on how relief should be provided will be presented to the President without delay.
