Sri Lanka performs record PCR tests - DGHS

26 July, 2020

Sri Lanka, unlike other countries performs the targeted number of PCR tests. The percentage of Covid-19 positive cases in Sri Lanka is two percent, Health Services Director General Dr. Anil Jasinghe said.

According to Dr. Jasinghe, other countries perform a large number of PCR tests and by conducting these tests a large number of Covid-19 patients could be detected. However, in Sri Lanka PCR tests are conducted on targeted groups including random samples as the number of positive patients is very low. Epidemiology Unit sources said that only 650 Covid-19 patients (23.5 percent) are still receiving medical treatment in selected hospitals and 2,103 patients (76.1 percent) of the 2,764 patients had fully recovered and sent home.

There are 84 suspected cases in hospitals awaiting further testing. The Covid-19 recovery rate of Sri Lanka is 76.09 percent whereas it is 61.13 percent in the world. The Covid-19 recovery rate in USA is 47.74 percent, much lower than in Sri Lanka. The recovery rate in India is 63.49 percent.
