First normative dictionary on Quantity Surveying

2 August, 2020

A dictionary is a symbol of classiness to any given profession and it is no exception to the profession of quantity surveying. As perhaps known to many, quantity surveying is a cost and value discipline in the construction sector where the clients seek best value for money they embark on projects.

Having undergone several epochs, the profession of quantity surveying has now extended into the fourth industrial revolution where almost everything has been inexorably digitized.

As a result, the changes to the terminology used have also been inevitable and in fact, confusing to a greater extent.

These changes to the lexicon therefore require codification according to Prof. Chandana Jayalath, the principle editor of the Normative Dictionary of Quantity Surveying. Prof. B.A.K.S. Perera and Prof. Andy Ross co-edited the dictionary with over 3,000 entries.

According to Prof. Jayalath, this dictionary has been primarily compiled to secure a proper understanding of the quantity surveying jargon.

The dictionary establishes the nomenclature which is indeed useful in the pursuit of one’s career as a quantity surveyor.

It is not only important but in a degree necessary, that the quantity surveyors now get the opportunity to read a dictionary exclusively dedicated for the discipline they belong to, Prof. Jayalath said. The QS Dictionary is a Godage publication.
