There is a conspiracy hatched by the fragmented Opposition to scuttle the landslide victory of the Sri Lanka Podu Jana Peramuna (SLPP) at the General Election, the Patriotic United National Party (PUNP) stated in a media release dated July 31.

The release said that the same mud-slinging campaign orchestrated by the Mada Balakaya is back at work this time as well. Their principal aim is to curtail Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa’s preferential votes by spreading various canards and fabricated stories during the last leg of the General Election.

Several Non Governmental Organisations are to play a key role in this campaign. WhatsApp and Voice Messages have already been uploaded on the internet to prevent the middle class and the youth casting their votes for the Prime Minister.

The conspiracy is spearheaded by some ministers of the previous Yahapalana Government to sully the image of the PM Rajapaksa. Last year he received 425,000 preferential votes, a percentage of 89.3. The conspirators are hell-bent on creating dissension within the Sri Lanka Podu Jana Peramuna and bring it to local and international disrepute.

The other highlights of their sinister campaign are creating mischief at polling stations by organised gangs and preventing people casting their votes, by hook or by crook.

Their post election gimmicks vary from mobilising people against the Government on the ground they were deprived the opportunity to cast their votes and demanding cancellation of election results, the media release added.

Agents of imperialist forces, those with dreams of a federal state and parties responsible for the Easter Sunday bombing are operating cheek by jowl with the NGO cabal.

The patriotic UNP appeals to the Maha Sangha, other religious leaders, Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim patriots to unite to defeat this conspiracy.
