If elected, we will be the first to clean up parliament - NPP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake

2 August, 2020

Leader of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and Colombo district candidate of the National People’s Power (NPP) Anura Kumara Dissanayake said if NPP members are elected at the upcoming election they will be the first to take up the task of cleaning up the parliament.

“If people vote for us and a number of us are elected we will lead the struggle to clean up the parliament” he said.

Dissanayake said following the election old crises will be renewed and might even be worsened thereby bringing the fractioned public into one camp.

“This is where our political activism will begin” he said. Pointing out that both main parties have ruled the country alternatively for the last 72 years, Dissanayake said neither party has resolved the problems people. “We will be given the opportunity to awaken the public consciousness after August 5” he said.

According to Dissananayake neither Sajith Premadasa nor Ranil Wickremesinghe has the ability to take up this task. “Ranil has been bound tight by the Bond scam and Sajith is now tightly bound by the financial irregularities that have surfaced in the Central Cultural Fund” he said. “Therefore, after August 5 it will be the NPP that brings about a new turning point in Sri Lankan politics” he added.

According to him, the future of the country appears bleak and the economy is already in deep crisis. “Inevitably the government will have to take decisions that will oppress the people” he said. Dissanayake said that it will be the NPP that will unfurl the political map of the country there onwards. “Therefore, even though we will not have government power at that time, as the main opposition, a great impetus to our political journey will be built up after August 5. Our political activities will be planned accordingly” he noted.

Dissanayake also said his party will support any steps that are taken for the benefit of the people. He said however they will oppose any decision that will be harmful to the people and the country. “We will defeat anything that will be harmful and we will also prove that both main parties have no solutions to the problems faced by the people” he added.

According to Dissanayake the NPP MPs will perform their parliamentary duties in three aspects. “First they will support the good decisions, the second will be to oppose and defeat harmful moves being taken. The third will be to make people understand that the main political camps are not capable of developing the country” he said. “This will be our role, today and in the future” he added. The NPP leader urged the people to vote for the NPP to raise a voice against oppression. “Vote for us to save the country from economic and social collapse and to steer the country in the right direction. We have always stood for what is right in Parliament and done justice to those who vote for us. We will continue to do the same and ensure the rights of the people” he said.
