A new constitution vital to address problems of Tamils-TNA Leader R. Sampanthan

2 August, 2020

A new constitution through a new parliament is our only hope in the 2020 Parliament election, Leader of the Tamil National Alliance R.Sampanthan told the Sunday Observer.

Tamils of this country need a new constitution to address their political aspirations and we thoroughly believe that the hopes of the Tamils will be fulfilled through the new parliament.

“This demand has been stressed throughout our political campaigns and we want a political solution to the long standing issues within an undivided, united and indivisible Sri Lanka, “ the TNA leader said.

He said, “We are having the same constitution for the past 70 years and unfortunately it led us to a thirty- year war. What we want is people to be free to decide what they want. Therefore powers must be shared in a way that people of all backgrounds can enjoy its benefits.”

Since 1994 Tamils of this country expected a political solution at every election and so far lot of work has been done and every government assured to solve this issue, but unfortunately nothing has happened. So our hope at this moment is for a new constitution. Only a new constitution can give a permanent solution to the long standing issues and address the political aspirations of the Tamils. Therefore the new parliament and its members should adopt a new constitution which offers a political solution within an undivided, united and indivisible Sri Lanka.

“We are not only concerned about Tamils but also sensitive to the interests of the Muslims as well. Muslims should trust us and vote with us. We will not disappoint our Muslim brethren”, R.Sampathan added during a rally at Pullmodai.

He further said, “Muslim leaders think only about their survival but TNA is concerned about the welfare of people.
