SLFP’s historic victory in Jaffna

9 August, 2020

After almost 60 years, the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) recorded its biggest majority in the Jaffna district beating the TNA record. This clearly shows how much the people had yearned for change, said the new SLFP parliamentarian Angajan Ramanathan who secured the highest number of preferential votes at the August 5 election.

“The Tamils have voted for change. Therefore, I will definitely address their needs and resolve their issues. This is why they have given me such a large number of preferential votes. I thank all who voted for me. This shows the trust they have reposed in me. This is a big change and the Tamils in Jaffna have spoken in one voice. The other Tamil representatives who were elected in the North should join hands with us to develop the Jaffna and Kilinochchi districts.

When it comes to the North, some politicians focus only on the rights of the Tamils. The Government will provide the people’s basic needs and infrastructure and help them to improve their economic status.

Now that the election is over, I hope, all politicians would sink party affiliations and work for the people,” he said.

Not a single Member of Parliament was chosen directly from the SLFP in the North, up to now, as they had been chosen from the National list. This was the first time in history that the SLFP had contested the Jaffna district.

Angajan Ramanathan will enter Parliament with 36,895, the highest votes beating the TNA record.
