Second oldest golf championship postponed

9 August, 2020

The second oldest golf meet in the world, the Sri Lanka Amateur Golf Championship, has been postponed again by the governing body of the sport, Sri Lanka Golf (SLG) after a special meeting under the chairmanship of Air Chief Marshal Harsha Abeywickrama last month.

“This decision was not an easy one. Health officials did not give us permission to hold this golf tournament. We had planned to conduct this tournament is the first week of September but was forced to postpone it due to fears of the second wave of the Covid-19,” an official of SLG told the Sunday Observer.

This oldest golf championship was to be held for the 132nd time in Sri Lanka. It was held previously in Colombo or Nuwara Eliya.

The history of this tournament shows that players from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and other countries in Asia also participated in the past.
