Former cricketers of Zahira College in Colombo have organized a cricket match in memory of their former legends Fazal Burah and MMK Namiz who excelled on the field at school and club level from 9 am at the College ground in Maradana today.

The match will be played for the Burah-Namiz Memorial Trophy.

Burah joined Zahira in 1983 after starting his academic career at St. Mary’s College, Kegalle and excelled in cricket, rugby, soccer and athletics. He was a member of the College First XV rugby team as a fly half and centre three-quarter from 1984 to 1988 and was the vice-captain of the First XI cricket team in the 1986/87 season.

After leaving school he played for CH and FC for 15 years before representing Havelocks for a season and was in the junior National squads.

He worked at the Maharaja Organization as its Marketing and Administration Manager and starred in a few television dramas and big screen movies.

He sadly passed away on August 8, 2009 at a young age of 42 during a family outing in Kalutara.

Namiz joined Zahira from Grade Five after an early education in Trincomalee and Beruwela.

He was outstanding sportsman at Zahira representing the school’s cricket, rugby, soccer and athletic teams while leading them to win several titles. (AN)
