Fashions from the Venice Film Festival 2020

20 September, 2020

The Venice Film Festival’s step and repeat, by all accounts, is a familiar sight: sprawling red carpet, crush of photographers taking pictures, blinding white lights, and a sea of flack trailing behind celebrities like Cate Blanchett, Tilda Swinton, and Maya Hawke. But this year — during a season that has proved to be the celebrity event equivalent of a dry, dry desert — Covid-19 caused the scene at VFF to look drastically different. Photographers crouched in the pit behind their lenses, stationed six feet apart from one another; the usual crowd of fans cheering on their favourite actors was nonexistent, and only small groups of approved attendees were allowed to enter the Palazzo del Cinema. Everyone wore masks (including Swinton, whose face covering wasn’t made of cloth, nor was it the disposable variety, as has been Blanchett’s mask of choice. It was a golden, handheld face shield).

But one aspect of the Film Festival that did not waver in the face of the pandemic was the fashion. From Gia Coppola in a tiered Gucci dress to Emma Corrin wearing Miu Miu, here are our picks for best dressed.
