In a hot arid area of Nallur, in Jaffna, rises the majestic Hindu temple for Skanda/Murugan the god for love, war and beauty. The ‘Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil is a significant Hindu temple in Nallur, Northern Province, Sri Lanka. The founder of the ‘Nallur Kovil’ is ‘Don Juan Ragunatha’, Maapaana, Mudaliyar. The main Deity is Lord Murugan/Skanda Kumara and Katharagama Deviyo.
The temple itself symbolizes a kind of peace that can only he felt in the most divine of Holy Palaces. The festival of God Murugan is spread over a period of twenty five days during special (poojas) offering. Various Yogams and Abhishekams are conducted too.
The design of the kovil resembles in the design of an ancient temple. It was built in 1948 A.D. In the beginning the kovil, was built with wood. After some years, the temple did not look attractive like now. So, the Nallur kovil Administration decided to re-build the kovil. At present, we can see the fourth reconstruction of the kovil. Inside the kovil, we can see many artworks in gold and silver. It is a tourist attraction. We must protect our ancestors’ creations for the future generation.
