From four walls with a closed door to centre stage and an ovation

8 November, 2020

How many John Kennedys, Winston Churchills, Lincolns, or some even better are born and die inside the rooms of young aspiring speakers?

They may stand on their chairs, chin up, glance at the empty room with a smile filled with pride, pretend the world has gathered to listen to them, and tell their story to an imaginary audience which they wish would be filled with actual people one day.

Their stories are trapped inside four walls with a closed-door waiting to be heard. It is true that young talent is often wasted without being able to showcase it outside their rooms.

Best Speaker

The University of Kelaniya Gavel Club annually culls the young aspiring Kennedys, and Churchills, providing them with a proper platform to stand chin up, glance at a real audience with pride as they tell their beautiful unheard stories.

Amidst the chaos of the pandemic, the Inter-School Best Speaker Contest 2020 successfully conducted on an online platform by the University of Kelaniya Gavel Club under two categories, junior and senior.

School goers from around the country participated in the contest; it started with 512 contestants and ended with three winners from each category.
