Rugby pushed further away to January

15 November, 2020

Rugby in Sri Lanka is set to kick off in January 2021 with a Sevens tournament to be held in Galle or in Kandy.

All leading teams in the country totaling eight will participate in this tournament that is organized by Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR). The teams will be Kandy SC, CR & FC, CH & FC, Havelock SC, Police SC, Navy SC, Up Country Lions SC and Army SC. There will be four women’s teams from leading clubs, also in action.

Sri Lanka rugby fans that crave to watch matches in large numbers may not be allowed into the ground to watch these matches due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Should this virus come under control and see the number of infections reduced the officials may allow the crowds into the ground.

Leading players are bound to make their appearance in this tournament to catch the eye of the selectors. However, all teams will be permitted to field foreign players in their side. This will make the tournament more thrilling to watch for the fans.

Teams have more than one month to train for this tournament.

Already every team has selected their captain and some have even hired new coaches. Some players have also crossed over to other clubs for better perks.

The outcome of this tournament should see many young players who missed the schools season out in action for their respective club teams.

Hopes are that this will pave the way for more Sevens tournaments to be organized during the rest of the year as requested by Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa who was a rugby player himself and captained the Sri Lanka team.
