Madrasa schools to be monitored- Prof. G.L Peiris

22 November, 2020

Education Minister, Prof. G.L Peiris said the Education Ministry is monitoring all matters pertaining to those permitted to teach in Madrasa schools, the courses taught and the manner in which students are enrolled. He said those who visit Sri Lanka from abroad seeking visas to teach in those schools should be monitored closely and it would be irresponsible to employ them to teach in schools without looking into their background and past behaviour.

He said the Department of Immigration and Emigration and the Intelligence Services should work in close coordination to seek such information.

The Minister was responding to a question by MP Kavinda Jayawardena in Parliament on Friday (20).

He said that when President Gotabaya Rajapaksa was Sri Lanka’s Defence Secretary, a formal mechanism had been in place to admit students and teachers to Madrasa schools. However, its functioning was disrupted after the Good Governance Government came to power, he said.

The Minister said the Education Minister has a duty to supervise Madrasa schools and that he wouldexecute that responsibility.
