Measures have been taken to rectify the salary anomaly of principals and teachers, Education Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris told Parliament yesterday, November 28  adding, that they will be paid an interim allowance until their salary anomaly is sorted out.

Thereafter, instructions were given to the Education Ministry Secretary to submit all information pertaining to that Cabinet decision to the National Salaries Commission (NSC).He said steps will be taken to rectify the salary anomaly of principals and teachers through the next Budget based on the recommendations by the NSC.

The Minister said the Education Ministry has already sent all the information regarding the salary anomaly to the NSC. Until a decision is taken by the NSC, the Cabinet decided on November 27 to pay an interim allowance to principals and teachers.

Prof. Peiris said the Treasury Secretary had agreed to provide additional funds to pay this interim allowance. “It is a pleasure to note that after making a big effort, we have been able to pay this allowance until a permanent solution is found to their salary anomaly.”

The Minister said, “Amid the Covid-19 pandemic situation in the country, we should appreciate the cooperation extended by the principals and teachers to conduct the GCE Advanced Level Examination and theYear Five Scholarship Examination.
