Discarded athletes back for Nationals

13 December, 2020

Some fifty per cent of the athletes who were left out of the limited number have been admitted to participate at the National Championship that will be held over four days at the Sugathadasa Stadium.

The Nationals will be held from December 26 to 29 and will see about 500 athletes participating to achieve higher rankings and qualifications levels for the Tokyo Olympics and the Commonwealth Games to be held next year and the year after.

The prevailing situation in the country had forced Sri Lanka Athletics (SLA) to limit the number of participants in order to maintain health guidelines. Even the location of the Stadium is under lockdown and SLA has to obtain permission from authorities to transport the athletes to the Stadium direct from Torrington.

A total of 38 events will be worked out over the four days with about nine to ten events to be held in a day. Over 40 athletes have entered for some events and will see several stages being worked out to find the eight finalists in each event such as the short distance events.

If all goes well athletes will be vying to establish records along the way and be called up for national representation.
