Galle girl shines in gymnastics

Sasandi Karunasena is fast becoming a star performer in Gymnastics, a sport that is becoming popular at Sangamitta College in Galle.

She took to gymnastics at the age of six years and has attained many achievements during the last three years. She is being coached by Asantha Karunanayake, Dinidu Premachandra and Pradeep Chandimal all these years. As a ten-year-old Sasandi had displayed her talents by winning two gold medals at the Junior National Gymnastic Championships in 2017.

She stamped her class winning a gold and a bronze medal and was adjudged under-9 girls champion at the Southern Province Junior School Gymnastic Championship held in 2018. She kept improving and in 2019 she took part in two events at the Inter-District Gymnastic Championship (All island) and emerged champion in the under-10 age category. She won two golds and a silver medal.

In addition she was named under-10 girls champion at the Southern Province Gymnastic championships winning one gold and two silver medals.

Though 2020 was eventless in most sports, Sasandi took the opportunity to participate in the Southern Province Junior Schools Gymnastic Championships.

She emerged as the under-10 girls champion with good performances in three events. (DR)
