Two athletes who performed impressively at the 98th National athletic championship are to receive overseas training scholarships.

They are Sarangi Silva and Sreshan Dhananjaya who will receive six months training in Qatar provided by the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Sri Lanka. Two more athletes to be selected by the High Performance Committee of the Sports Ministry are also in line to receive this scholarship.

Dhananjaya the 23 year old won a Gold medal in the long jump and won the Silver medal in the triple jump.

Sarangi Silva the 24 year old established a new National record with a leap of 6.33m in the long jump. Trained by YK Kularatne, Sarangi won two Gold medals last year at the South Asian Games.

Sri Lanka Athletics (SLA) has provided all particulars to the High Performance Committee to select the other two athletes for the scholarship that will be funded by the Ministry of Sports.

Sri Lanka athletic teams won 15 Gold, 12 Silver and eight Bronze medals during the 2019 South Asian Games beating India in athletics.

Athletics is also one of Sri Lanka’s best performing sports in the international arena, especially in multi sports events with two Olympic medals as all the Asian Games Gold medals were won in athletics. (TBR)
