Matale Thomians move into cricketing future

The unveiling of the Thomians’ Past Cricket Captains’ name boards and inauguration of the College Cricket Wing was held at the St. Thomas’ College Matale last week with the sole motive of developing the sport at the school, Ravi Punchihewa member of the Governing Council said.

Principal of the St. Thomas’, Dhammika Hewawasam who was also an opening batsman of the 1984-85 College team was the Chief Guest on this day.

“Our objectives are very clear to bring our college cricket to a competitive standard,” said Punchihewa who is also a match referee.

“We want to develop cricketers with the right skills required to perform better. Leadership, decision making, communication and physical conditioning, rules and regulations of the game are all part of the concept of the Cricket Wing”.

He said that a talent hunt is also on the cards not only to unearth cricketers but also for coaches and support staff.

Punchihewa captained St. Thomas’ College in the 1988-89 season.

The members elected to the Governing Council of the Cricket Wing are Wasantha Pamunuwa, M. Manoharan, Kalyana Samarakoon, Dhammika Hewawasam (principal), Niranjan Ellepola, PH Chandradasa, Ravi Punchihewa, PK Navaratne, Aruna Mahinda, Asitha Senanayake, Sujeewa Godaliyadda, Krishan Anandakumara, Ruwan Chandraratne, Ajantha Gamage, Manoj Jayasena, Charitha Senanayake, Mervin Perera, Saman Senanayake and CD Thotagamuwa.
