Shramadana at Bellanwila bird sanctuary

The Dehiwala-Mt.Lavinia Municipal Council and the Department of Wildlife organised a shramadana at the bird sanctuary, Bellanwila, Addittiya to mark World Wetland Day last week.

The planting of fruit trees to increase the bird population and the replacement of the plaque also took place with the participation of Dehiwala–Mt. Lavinia Municipal Council Commissioner M.M.C.K.K. Mannapperuma, Mayor Nawalage Stanley Dias, Secretary E. Anusha Kumari, Administrative Officer Nuwan Sanjeewa Fernando, Opposition Leader Sunethra Ranasinghe, members of the Municipal Council, Environment Officers, the environment police attached to Dehiwala, Mt. Lavinia and Kohuwala, doctors and senior officials of the Department of Wildlife, staff of the Central Environment Authority and newly appointed graduate trainees of the DMMC.

The event was organised to emphasise the importance of wetlands among the people and to prevent unauthorised construction and encroaching.
