The country could save  Rs. 3 billion  spent annually to print currency notes if the public adapt to the e-payment system, said MP Chandima Weerakkody, the guest of honour at a ceremony in  Galle on Saturday to promote the Central Bank’s   Mulu Ratatama LankaQR initiative in the Southern Province.

With that money we can develop the East Container Terminal and the West Container Terminal, he said.

Weerakkody said that the IT literacy rates in Sri Lanka were high and over 190,000 businesses registering with  LankaQR within six months was proof in itself. “We are seeing what we preached on political platforms becoming a reality,” he said.

Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka Prof. W D Lakshman, Chairman and CEO of Hatton National Bank PLC Jonathan Alles, Chairman and CEO  of the SDB Bank, Thilak Piyadigama and many top officials in the government and financial sectors attended the promotion.
