Air Force cycle race on March 7

The 22nd edition of the ‘Guwan Hamuda Papedi Savariya 2021’ is set to flag off on March 7 from Colombo.

This cycling event was started way back in 1997 to mark the Air Force’s anniversary celebrations which falls on March 2.

In the past years this event was run over three days, but this time it will be run on just one day.

“Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel has come forward to be the main sponsor of the event said Wing Commander Leelaratne, secretary of the Air Force Cycling section at a media briefing held at the Air Force headquarters on Wednesday.

Over 150 men and over 50 women riders will be flagged off on this day.

The men riders who will commence the race together will ride up to Wattala as a peace parade and will commence the race proper from there. These riders will pass through Ja-Ela, Minuwangoda, Divulapitiya, Giriulla, Narammala, Kuliyapitiya, Madampe, Wennappuwa, Kochchikade and Negombo to cross the finish line opposite the Air Base in Katunayake covering a distance of 179 kilo metres.

The women’s race will be flagged off from Ja Ela and proceed through Ekala, Minuwangoda, Divulapitiya, Giriulla, Pannala, Dankotuwa, Kochchikade and Negombo to finish opposite the Air Base in Katunayake, a distance of 70 kilo metres according to Wing Commander Leeleratne.

The presentation ceremony will be held in the evening at the Eagles Lagoon View’ Reception Hall with Air Force Commander Air Marshal, Sudharshana Pathirana gracing the occasion as the chief guest.
