Air Force cycle race today

The 22nd ‘Guwan Hamuda Papedi Sawariya’ cycle race will be flagged off today (7) and at the Air Force Headquarters in Colombo.

It will cover approximately 160 kms while the women’s race will start from the Air Force Trade Training School in Ekala to cover a distance of 76 kms. The race is scheduled to finish at Katunayake (20 km junction).

Air Force is conducting this event, as part of their 70th anniversary celebrations. It will have the elite riders from all clubs affiliated to the Sri Lanka Cycling Federation, competing for honours.

Over 100 male and 30 female riders, including many with Sri Lankan national rankings are expected to compete.

SLT-Mobitel is the principal sponsor of the ‘Guwan Hamuda Papedi Sawariya’.

Individual winners and runners-up of the men’s race are to receive Rs. 250,000, Rs. 150,000 and Rs. 75,000 respectively and the overall Sprint Champion will be awarded Rs. 20,000.

The winner of the women’s race will walk away with Rs. 100,000. The Team championship prizes will be Rs. 100,000 to the winners and the runners-up prize is Rs. 75,000 with the overall young champion rider to get Rs. 25,000 according to the organisers.
