Taekwondo goes places

Five winners from the open category and university category of the Ambassador’s Cup Taekwondo Championship were presented awards at a ceremony held last Tuesday at the Korean embassy.

This awards ceremony was hosted by the embassy of the Republic of Korea in collaboration with the Taekwondo Federation of Sri Lanka (TFSL).

The tournament attracted more than 2000 competitors from throughout the country. They were admired for their enthusiasm and displaying the true spirit of Taekwondo.

“This tournament was a great opportunity for the Sri Lankan athletes in Taekwondo to showcase their talents. The Federation recognizes the support and the goodwill extended by the Korean ambassador to promote and develop Taekwondo in Sri Lanka.

“The Ambassador’s Cup Taekwondo Championship has successfully contributed to deepening the ties between the two countries,” said Kanchana Jayaratne president of Taekwondo Federation of Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka participated in Taekwondo at the 13th South Asian Games 2019 and won four gold medals.

Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa graced the awards ceremony.

“I strongly believe that Taekwondo in Sri Lanka has great potential and more to achieve,” said the Korean ambassador Santhush Woonjin Jeong.

Dulaksha Devindi, MNM Nishman – Dharmapala Taekwondo Club, Ratnapura

University category winners:

MGSS Tharangani – University of Uva Wellassa

KM Kathriarachchi – University of Ruhuna

Referees presented with awards:

WTI Fernando, Ajantha Karunaratne, ABCI Thushara
