Grammys 2021: Billie Eilish says Megan Thee Stallion deserved Record of the Year win

21 March, 2021

It was another successful night at the Grammys for Billie Eilish. The 2021 ceremony featured the star taking home a win for Record of the Year, but Billie wasn’t quite ready to completely accept the honor.

Following a Grammys sweep in four major categories at last year’s ceremony, Billie was again up for multiple nominations at Sunday evening’s 2021 festivities. Taking to the stage to accept the Grammy for her single, “Everything I Wanted,” Billie said that she felt Megan Thee Stallion was more deserving of the honor, Pitchfork noted.

Calling the win “embarrassing,” Billie explained that she had not expected to take home the award. “Megan, girl... I was gonna write a speech about how you deserve this but then I was like, ‘There’s no way they’re going to choose me.’ I was like, ‘It’s hers.’ You deserve this. You had a year that I think is untoppable. You are a queen — I want to cry thinking about how much I love you... You deserve everything in the world, I think about you constantly... You deserve it,” she said on stage.

Ending her speech, Billie noted, “Genuinely, this goes to her.” She then asked the audience to join her in cheering for Megan. After sharing in a moment of appreciation for Megan, Billie continued on with her speech.

Megan, along with her “Savage” remix collaborator, Beyoncé, were nominated for 2021 Record of the Year, along with Doja Cat, Post Malone, DaBaby and Roddy Ricch, and Black Pumas. Beyoncé also received a solo nomination in the category for her single, “Black Parade.”

Despite not securing a win for Record of the Year, Megan didn’t go home empty-handed. Her “Savage” remix won Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance. Thee Stallion was also named Best New Artist.
