President’s condolence message

11 April, 2021

On behalf of the government and the people of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, I convey my deep and heartfelt condolences on the passing away of your beloved husband His Royal Highness Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh.

His Royal Highness had a special affection for Sri Lanka and often recalled with warmth his short stay in Ceylon during the World War II. The people of Sri Lanka carry fond memories of his stay as well as of his subsequent visits to Sri Lanka accompanying your Majesty on two State Visits.

While we mourn with great sorrow the passing away of His Royal Highness, we recall his great service to the British nation, his distinguished naval career, and his service to the Commonwealth.

Please convey, your Majesty, my condolences and those of the people of Sri Lanka to members of the Royal Family. Our thoughts are with your Majesty, the Royal Family and the people of the United Kingdom during this sorrowful time.

Please accept Your Majesty, the assurances of my highest consideration.

– Gotabaya Rajapaksa President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.
