“Cruella” Sequel Reportedly in the Works at Disney

12 June, 2021

Disney is gearing up for more Cruella.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the recent live-action film starring Emma Stone as the iconic villain is already in talks for a sequel.

The second film will once again include director Craig Gillespie and screenwriter Tony McNamara at the helm, and Emma is expected to reprise her role as Estella/Cruella.

Cruella, which also stars Emma Thompson, John McCrea, and Kirby Howell-Baptiste, made its debut on May 28 in both theaters and via Disney+’s Premium Access.

Based on its high box office numbers — $26.5 million in North America over the four-day holiday weekend — it would make sense that execs are reportedly already looking ahead to the next installment.

“We are very pleased with Cruella’s box office success, in conjunction with its strong Disney+ Premier Access performance to date,” said a Disney spokesperson, per Deadline. “The film has been incredibly well received by audiences around the world, with a 97% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes in addition to A’s in every demographic from CinemaScore on opening weekend, ranking it among the most popular of our live-action reimaginings.

We look forward to a long run as audiences continue to enjoy this fantastic film.”

Gillespie hinted at the possibility of a sequel in an interview with Collider earlier this year, explaining that “we’ve only just met” Emma Stone’s rendition of the classic Disney character.

“I’d love to now see the full-blown Cruella, fully loaded,” the director said, “She’s managed to get the support system around her and she can really expand on her brand.

I’d love to see where that takes her and how you could almost destroy her from inside out, if she’s not careful with all that power.”
