Former triple jumper Arden passes away

Former Sri Lanka triple jump record holder Arden de Silva passed away in the USA on Tuesday at the age of 80, a family spokesman said.

Arden held the record for six years.

A product of Maris Stella College in Negombo, Arden took to athletics in the late 1960s and continued his career till the early 1980s. During his school career he won the event twice at the Public schools meet setting new records for the event. After leaving school he joined the Ceylonese Track and Field Club (CT&FC) to continue his athletics and was able to set the national record which he held for six long years.

He left the country with the intention of looking for a better future and he helped some of Sri Lanka’s leading athletes to make their way to the USA.

He leaves behind his wife Loretta, three sons and two daughters.
