A 36-year-old German citizen of Sri Lankan origin died in the flash floods that swept through several parts of Europe recently.

The man, a resident of Jaffna, was the only Sri Lankan known to have died in the deluge that killed hundreds of people in many parts of Europe, the majority ... of them in German cities.

The victim has been identified as Rasaratnam Luxmanan who hailed from Meesalai, Jaffna. Luxmanan, a father of two, became a German citizen several years ago and was living in Rhine Westphalia where the flash floods destroyed several homes and movable assets such as vehicles.

Luxmanan’s death occurred on July 15 and his relatives in Jaffna were informed two days ago.

According to sources, the victim had rushed out of his home to escape the rising flood waters only to be fatally hit by a car that was being washed away. The body was found a day after he was swept by the floods and was identified by a tattoo on his body. A large number of Tamils of Sri Lankan origin living in various parts of Germany were affected by the flash floods.
