8 August, 2021

Legendary singer and leader of the Gypsies Band, Sunil Perera is among the several popular artistes who fell victim to the deadly Covid-19 pandemic last week.

The news and images of the singer with an oxygen mask, receiving treatment at a private hospital, was shared on social media platforms during the weekend. “Many of his fans from all over the world were worried about him but he is now on the way to recovery,” singer Rajiv Sebastian, a close family friend, told the Sunday Observer yesterday afternoon.

“The veteran singer who is 68, was in a critical condition on Thursday, needing external oxygen supply but his health had improved by Saturday,” Sebastian said quoting his brother Piyal Perera. The entire family of the Gypsies leader except his younger daughter had contracted the virus. His wife was receiving treatment on a bed next to the legendary singer. It is reported that the singer had not taken any of the Covid-19 vaccines.

Among the other famous artistes who had contracted the virus are lead actress in the ‘Sihina Genena Kumariye’ teledrama, Shalani Tharaka, Nayanathara Wickramarachchi in ‘Deveni Inima’ and actor and former MP Ranjan Ramanayake who is currently serving a term at the Angunakolapelessa prison.

Three Members of Parliament, SLPP MPs Tissa Kuttiarachchi and Rohana Dissanayake and SJB MP Dilip Wedarachchi have also contracted the virus. Several other MPs have also been subjected to PCR tests as first contacts.
