The Chess Federation of Sri Lanka (CFSL) received a donation of equipment from the German ambassador Holger Seubert at a simple ceremony held at his residence last Wednesday.
The ambassador being a chess player himself and the Federal Republic of Germany made the donation to assist in the promotion of chess among disadvantaged groups in Sri Lanka.
The equipment from Germany is worth Rs. 1.5 million designed to cater to handicapped persons in particular.
Ambassador Seubert declared that the donation was a result of an initiative by the president of the CFSL Luxman Wijesuriya.
He further said Germany was delighted to be able to support this valuable and praiseworthy initiative and was particularly impressed by SLCF’s charitable work and its firm commitment to promote chess in Sri Lanka. Wijesuriya pointed out that it was a great honour to have ambassador Seubert who himself in an ardent chess follower and player helping Sri Lanka.
Wijesuriya and Seubert played an exhibition chess match to mark the occasion.
