Inter club Sevens rugby goes abegging, no takers

12 September, 2021

Rugby referees continue to be in touch with the techniques in refereeing despite all plans to conduct tournaments for schools and clubs stalled due to the current situation in the country.

“Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) want to conduct a club Sevens tournament in December but some clubs have expressed their refusal to participate as they have failed to obtain sponsors,” said Dilroy Fernando the chief instructor for the Sri Lanka Society of Rugby Football Referees (SLSRFR).

The Society continues to conduct workshops on Tuesdays and Saturdays with nine members of the top panel and several other referees joining via video link. They have invite former referees Ana Saranapala and Aruna Jayasekera, to speak on various topics arising in difficult situations.

“We even had the Australian coach and referee to speak to our referees over the zoom,” said Fernando.

These workshops are necessary to keep the referees refreshed and be in touch with the techniques of refereeing.

“Schools rugby that was to start this month is also on hold as all the schools players have to be vaccinated before they get on the field,” said Fernando.

Club players have been vaccinated and are in a position to play.
