Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa claimed that unlike in the past, the Ministry does not interfere in selection matters when it comes to picking the Sri Lanka cricket team.

His comments come days after Sri Lanka won the ODI series 2-1 and lost the T20 series 0-3 against South Africa.

“We have to look at our future and make plans for success in this sport. It is our responsibility to create that platform and the decisions are made by the selection committee and the cricket committee of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) unlike in the past when there was interference,” said Minister Rajapaksa.

“We all know that some past Ministers interfered and the results were negative. But today the selection committee has a free hand in making decisions and bring in more youngsters for the future.”

Pramodya Wickramasinghe the Chairman of the Selection Committee of SLC said that the young players selected will mature with time and experience.

Sri Lanka is currently at a team building phase with senior players reaching the age of retirement combined with disciplinary issues where three players were banned for 12 months.
