Drunken policeman on the mat

BALAPITIYA: A policeman who was deployed at the Balapitiya Magistrate’s official residence was arrested for drunken behaviour.

The suspect was arrested by officers of the Ambalangoda Police.

The suspect too was attached to the Ambalangoda Police Station.

He was produced before medical personnel at the Balapitiya Base Hospital and tested positive for alcohol consumption.

Dies after tree crashes to the ground

MORAWAKA: An alleged arecanut thief plunged to his death after the tree he was climbing crashed to the ground.

The victim had sneaked into a private land at Morawaka to pluck arecanuts, when the incident took place.

The man sustained serious head injuries during the fall and died while under treatment at the Morawaka Government Hospital.

Trap gun kills two

TIRAPPANA: Two people were killed and a third injured after a concealed trap gun accidentally triggered-off in a bizarre incident at Tirappane close to the Murayakulla Tank.

The trap gun had apparently been placed by poachers hunting for game in the wild.

One person was subsequently arrested in connection with the incident.

Extortion gang rounded up

HANWELLA: An alleged extortion gang was rounded up after they shot at a businessman’s house at Hanwella.

The alleged shooting took place after the businessman refused to pay extortion money to the gang. One motorcycle, a grenade and an assortment of sharp weapons were later seized from the gang.
